Porters Of The Inca Trail

Details

Porters of the Inca Trail is a feature length documentary which follows Leoncio Monteagudo in his work on the famous four-day trek to the ruin citadel of Machu Picchu in southern Peru. We explore the porters' working conditions and their struggle for basic rights. After decades of abusive conditions the porters organized in a labor union and pressured the Peruvian government to ratify a law guaranteeing them basic rights. Unfortunately only a fraction of the 174 agencies licensed for the trek follow the law, so the struggle continues. Over 6000 registered porters work on Inca Trail, and they have become prey to a growing industry which caters to the vast amount of tourists who visit the Inca Trail. The industry is growing since Machu Picchu was named one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.
